Turtle Rescue

Turtles are a charismatic species, which regrettably isn’t too common within the marine protected area in comparison to the rest of the mediterranean . However, there is a steady rate of incidents where injured and accidentally caught turtles need to be taken care of.

Volunteers work in close relation with the zoological station and turtle rescue centre Anton Dorhn in Portici, Napoli, to coordinate and carry out turtle rescue and release. Releases are also a way to communicate biodiversity to the public within the park, with release-events held at regular intervals should the opportunity arise. Through these realeases, Project M.A.R.E., with the help of employees and volunteers from the rescue centre, can really include the public and promote environmental awareness at the same time. When present, turtle nests are also monitored and protected, also in coordination with the rescue centre.
